Menaul School and Faculty Advisor Chelsea Bunn are thrilled to announce several honors for The Petroglyph Review, the student-staffed Art and Literary magazine.
The National Council of Teachers of English has named The Petroglyph Review an Excellent magazine in the 2023 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest. This year, the contest received submissions from middle schools, high schools, and higher education institutions in 46 states and five countries.
In addition to this accolade, The American Scholastic Press Association has selected The Petroglyph Review as the recipient of two prestigious national awards: First Place in its annual magazine competition, and Most Outstanding Private School Literary-Art Magazine for 2023.
The Petroglyph Review represents the only school in the state of New Mexico to receive any of these awards from NCTE and ASPA for 2023.
Both contests are judged through a variety of criteria, including literary and artistic quality, variety of genre and voice, graphic design and layout, editing and proofreading, and publication conventions.
The winning issue was staffed by editors Charli Boatman (’24), Cesar Erives (’23), Malachi Flores (’23), Lily Looks-Twice (’24), Makayla McCann (’23), and Alex Rael (’23). This year’s issue is being edited by Seelush Chhetri (’25), Gabriella Encomienda (’25), Safwana Rahman (’27 ), and Amayah Schoener (’25). Chelsea Bunn serves as the Faculty Advisor.
“I am very proud of the writers and artists at Menaul School who were brave enough to share their voices,” Ms. Bunn said. “I’m especially proud that our publication is receiving this recognition, and I feel very privileged to work with such talented, creative students.”
The literary club’s dedication to excellence is reflected with this recognition. Upper School students submit creative writing and visual art as the school year progresses and The Petroglyph Review’s editors and faculty advisor work diligently on selecting the works to publish each year. The next issue of The Petroglyph Review will be released late in the spring semester. Submissions for Issue 2 are still being accepted: they can be submitted here.
